Researched & Written by

Stuck trying to figure out how to reset or restart a language course on Duolingo?

Don’t worry, I’ve been there too. I know how annoying it can be to have this happen, especially when you stopped studying a language for a while and forgot everything.

Restarting a course can often be challenging without proper guidance. But the good news is that you’ve come to the right place for answers.

The easiest way to reset or restart a Duolingo language course is by adjusting your settings. But, if that didn’t work, try deleting your account.

Read on to start a course from the beginning!

#1 Adjust Your Settings

Duolingo’s notifications allow us to stay motivated and continue with our language courses, but I’m sure you’ll agree that sometimes they can be a little passive-aggressive.

There’s nothing worse than getting an email saying that Duo is sad because you didn’t study that day. So I wouldn’t blame you at all if you turned your notifications off.

However, disabling them can easily make us forget to continue with our course.

If that’s your case, and you don’t remember anything about the language that you were trying to learn, try resetting or restarting the Duolingo course by following this quick guide:

Web-version:

  1. Go to duolingo.com and sign in to your account.
  2. Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of your screen. Then, select “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on “Learning Language” from the menu on the right of your screen.
  4. Select “Manage courses” to see your courses or click on this link duolingo.com/settings/courses. Then, click on “Remove” next to the name of the course you’d like to reset or restart.
  5. Click on “Delete” to confirm the process.
  6. Click on the flag icon at the top of your screen and select “Add a new course”.
  7. Select the course that you previously deleted.

Mobile app (Only available for iOS devices):

  1. Launch Duolingo and tap on the girl icon at the bottom of your screen to see your profile.
  2. Tap on the gear icon in the top-right corner of your screen to open the Settings menu.
  3. Select “Manage Courses”.
  4. Tap on the “-” icon next to the course you’d like to reset or restart.
  5. Select “Delete” to confirm the process. Then, tap on the home icon at the bottom of your screen.
  6. Tap on the flag at the top of your screen and select “+ Course”.
  7. Add the course you previously deleted.

Moving on, please force stop Duolingo to refresh any background processes.

The process of force quitting an app may vary on your device’s model, but if you’re using a Windows PC, open the task manager, click on the browser you’re using, and click on “End Task”.

And if you’re using your iPhone or iPad, you may close Duolingo by swiping up from the bottom of your screen and pausing in the middle. Then, swipe up on the app. Please note that if your device has a home button, you’ll need to double-click it to see the apps that are running in the back.

Once you’ve completed the steps above, launch Duolingo again. You should be able to start your course from the beginning without further trouble.

But, if that didn’t work, you may need to delete your account to restart or reset a Duolingo language course.

Don’t worry, though. Keep reading to learn how to do it.

#2 Delete Your Account

I know, this is probably the last thing you wanted to do, especially if you’re learning other languages. But, if the fix above didn’t do the trick, this just might.

You see, by deleting your Duolingo account, you’ll permanently remove your course progress, streak, and any other saved data, such as your user preferences.

Please note that this step should only be taken as a last resort.

As you noticed, if you delete your account and create a new one, you’ll be able to start a language course from the beginning.

Follow these quick instructions to delete your account and reset your Duolingo language course:

Web-version:

  1. Open Duolingo and click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of your screen.
  2. Choose “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Scroll down and click on “Delete my account”.
  4. Select “Erase personal data”. Duolingo will send you an email.
  5. Go to your email and open Duo’s message. Then, click on the “erase-confirm” link.
  6. Once your account has been deleted, please go back to Duolingo and create a new account.
  7. Select the language course you were trying to reset or restart.

Mobile app:

  1. Launch Duolingo and tap on the girl icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap on the gear icon in the top-right corner of your screen to open the Settings menu.
  3. Scroll down and tap on “Delete my account”.
